The Non Resolution

Happy New Year friends!

How 2013 has sprung upon us
For some reason I feel no urgency this year
No urgency to make resolutions
To figure out my goals

This isn't to say that I'm not motivated
I am. Very.
But as I get older perhaps I'm changing
I'm still as driven as ever but I'm more purposeful
Or at least I try to be

So this first post of the year isn't about all the goals
It's not about the resolutions
It's about sitting back and really thinking things through
What was 2012 really about?
What do I want to do this year?

I have a few general ideas
But I want to make them specific and I refuse to rush into them
Or just come up with something so I can share them at this timely moment
Maybe I'll have it figured out tomorrow, or next week, or maybe even next month...

But I want to be true to myself
To remain purposeful with that I write, read, share, support and create
So I'm taking these next few days and moments to really think through what 2012 was all about and what I'd like 2013 to be...

Have you realized your goals for the year yet?
I'd love to know what's high on your list this year!

I think my main aim for this year is to start making some big plans. So in a sense my entire year will be one big resolution-making session!

I think taking some time to work out what's right for you to be focussing on is a wise approach.

Happy New Year! x

I dont have specific goals yet but I do love resolutions and I think the start of a new year is a great time to reflect on what you have already achieved and look at what else you would like to do. I am going to spend more time thinking about it before I commit to anything. I hope 2013 is good you lovely lady xx

I haven't made a resolution this year either, I just want to live life and have fun, this way I won't be held accountable for not have reached a silly goal of loosing a few kilos or eating less candy.
Happy new year:)

I generally don't make any New Year's resolutions or goals. But i like to write down a list of things i want to do in general. So i tend to pick out things i want to work on from that list such as being more optimistic :)

Hey darling! I've missed your posts! I thought about not doing a year in review/goals post but then as I sat down the other day this word vomit came up and I am actually really grateful it did. It made me appreciate 2012 and myself a lot more then I had thought. I actually thought of 2012 as my worst year but after I listed it all out I don't think so any longer. As for the future and all I will do in 2013 I am very excited though it will mean great levels of sacrifice and determination on my part. I think I am mentally ready for that.

Happy New Year! I hope you're having a wonderful relaxing time a home! My one resolution is to create adventures for ourselves, time away, dinner with friends, camping, hiking etc. life is about adventuring.

Like you, I am taking my time. I may take my cue from my sister who has five goals a year, each from one category in her life. Health, Relationships, Financials, Personal, Educational. Or I may just set random goals, the only ones that have really surfaced so far are 'Do something nice for others every day" and for some reason a Dr Seuss quote keeps coming up in my mind "Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive, more youer than you".
I will let you know when I clarify my goals.

Happy new year! I hope that 2013 brings you plenty more special memories. I don't think that there's any need to have resolutions straight away - I've never understood the need to start a new regime on the first day of the first year (like a diet, quitting a bad habit etc), why not start when you are ready or before? I'm thinking mine is going to be to try and shop more thoughtfully, since that was a complete failure for me in 2012! xx

Your right, I feel like everyone has been in such a rush to start the goals, but I like you want to make sure they are meaningful and true to myself.

One of my biggest goals is eating healthy and being more happy with my daily life. Happiness can escape you, but it' what I discovered in 2012 and I want to see how far it can go! =)

Best wishes in the New Year!

This is such a beautiful post, Vanisha. It resonates with what 2013 means to me. This is the first time, I have not posted list of goals which has become a personal tradition for the last few years. Though I have one aim in 2013- which is to travel light. I've left all of my disappointments, heart aches, and broken expectations behind. I released myself from the past and cleared the baggage in 2012. I intend to take the time to pursue what is truly in my heart for 2013. Have a reflective and purposeful New Year! Wishing you many many blessings, good health, happiness and bliss.

I totally agree. Making and breaking new year resolutions are such standard behaviour for most of us, hence why I haven't made any lists this year. I am also very motivated to achieve certain things this year but being kinder to myself is a priority. I hope all your dreams and wishes come true this year and I look forward to reading about your journey through 2013! xx

Thanks for this post. I haven't yet figured out my goals for the year yet. Sure, I've given some thought to things I'd like to do this year, but I haven't really spent a lot of time trying to come up with a coherent and consistent goal or objective. Hopefully I have a chance to take some time to reflect over the next few days. Hope you had a fantastic holiday! Loved seeing all the pictures you were posting!

I think it's better if you don't make resolutions - this way you can't break them and you just live! happy new year!

I'm pretty non-resolution-y myself at the moment. I hardly ever make new year resolutions anyway.

But I think I'll need to reassess my purpose shortly.

Happy New Year, friend.

This is kind of the perspective I'm taking this year. I looking at a year of many changes ahead, so I'm gonna take it easy on myself.

Im with you on not making resolutions - the pressure to do them and then they get forgotten about and broken anyways! This year I have a word that I want to live by - Embrace - I want to embrace challenges, creativity, opportunities, and things that make my heart sing :)

I don't make resolutions anymore, haven't for years as they don't end up being followed through on.

I just set goals for the year, pick the best time to try it and go from there. More like a schedule.

I love that you're taking time to be purposeful and not put on stress to just do things, and I'm always inspired by your lively intentions and daily doings. For 2013, I really want to be present. I want to get back to doing things, enjoying things, living things. I have a dark cloud too and it's hard some days. But I hope to be present because it's all we have every morning, and I want to make the most of it.

It seems to be more of a trend these days with not making resolutions at new years or maybe it is just the people I'm come across that are thinking differently. I loved hearing your insight and especially placing influence on realizing your purpose. Happy New Year's Vanisha. I hope this year brings you much happiness, contentment, health, good company and cherished memories.

Thank you for sharing this. I have been feeling guilty that I am just not ready to make my resolutions/goals yet. I have started a little, but I feel like I just quite haven't wrapped my head around everything yet. Now I see, that is ok and I am feeling much better. Thank you! Happy New Year!

Hi Vanisha, a great though-provoking post to start the year, it made me reflect back as well and find out whats meaningful to me, I agree on staying true to oneself, as simple as it seems, it is so easy to forget sometimes. Hope you had a wonderful New years, Ive missed you :)

I can't believe we're at the start of another year. I've spent the last couple of weeks reflecting on the year that was, what I learned and how I've changed. I haven't crystallized what I want out of 2013 yet - all I know is that I need to be open, as I think it's going to be a year of change, challenge and excitement and I want to make sure I'm not closed to what may come. Happy 2013 lovely... I look forward to following your journey over the next 12 months x

I think that resolutions come up at any time of the year, so you could come up with some new ones in a two months period, but that doesn't mean they're less important!
Life is flowing fast!
Anyway, the beginning of a new year can give enough motivation to most of us to kickstart some things that have been previously regretted! I've just posted my resolutions list, and as soon as I've posted it I realized that I missed some! So I am doing a goals list now: an A3 cardboard with post-its stuck on it. An ever changing reminder of what needs to be done and where I'm aiming at! Wonderful! Everyone should do it! :D I definitely agree with your resolution of staying true to ourselves anyway. :D

I believe in making resolutions all year long! Not just at new years. I think if you hold yourself to a goal you voiced, born of pressure due to a 'new year' and a fresh start, won't truly be a commitment. I don't know if that makes sense... but I think 2013 will be a fabulous year for both of us!

Mimi Finerty said...

the whole resolution thing kinda scares me. its like your supposed to have such a new year overhaul. instead i opted for achievements for 2013; things id like to do but not so much pressure if i look back on december 2013 and go oh crap that didnt happen!

i like this post a lot! it's more important to just be purposeful and mindful than anything.
