How I Grow My Blog: Blogger Meet Ups

Sunday, January 6, 2013

This year, I'm going to be focusing on one blogging related aspect each week to help me really develop my blog. By develop and grow (in the title), I'm referring to quality (content, photos, interaction), not quantity (followers, statistics). I'm really excited to be doing this. Blogging is something that I hope to continue to do and that I hope to continue to love doing!

Week One: Blogger Brunch

This week I started off very simple - a blogger get together. I've always loved meeting up with other bloggers. Whether it's sharing a meal together, catching up for a quick drink or attending a function. I've met a number of bloggers both in my home city and in other places.

Organizing a get together

I did a Google search of bloggers in my area. There are various forums which have lists of bloggers by country. Perhaps you'd like to start a list yourself and see who else you find that way. It's nice to feel like you're not in this alone.

It can be scary approaching a blogger whose blog you love and follow to try to set up a blogger date, especially if you're shy. If you are shy, perhaps just dropping it casually in a tweet, comment or FB message - "let me know if you'd like to catch up for a coffee" (It helps if you already engage with the blogger). But this way you've left it open and up to the person to get in touch with you.

I'm not shy but I am selective about the bloggers I meet up with. I usually already follow, comment and engage with bloggers before I meet up with them. I wouldn't meet up with a blogger whose blog I didn't at the very least read.

If there aren't any bloggers in your area perhaps you'd like to extend your area and search wider. I'm always keen to meet with bloggers in Sydney (I'm in Canberra), it's not to far and it's nice having blog friends in a place that I visit often and that's close enough that if a blogger meet up happened, I could be off without too much hassle.

How blogger get togethers help you and your blog

You meet other bloggers in your area
You extend your social networks as well as your blogger ones
You discover interesting/new venues in your area
You can bounce of ideas
Sharing information about blogger events and blogger opportunities
Great tips on things like blog design, what works, what doesn't
Dealing with bloggers block
Helps you feel less alone
Talking through blogger etiquette
Feed off of each others energy!

I remember after a blogger brunch last year, we were all so motivated that straight after brunch we were at home working on our blogs!

If you have an opportunity to get together with bloggers in your area, I hope you give it a go. You might be pleasantly surprised that most bloggers are just as wonderful in real life. And if you don't enjoy it, that's still a lesson. Perhaps it just means you have found the right group yet?

If you're an Australian based blogger, let me know, and if you're in Sydney, let me know! Would be great to catch up for a coffee! (see what I did just there?!)

And if you're off to a blogger meet up, this post is a must read!As you can see, we're improving!

Have you been to many blogger meet ups?
Would you go?
What have your experiences been?

I have been to a blogger meet-up where about 60 girls came together and it was so much fun. Also, I have met a few other bloggers over the years either for a fun shopping day, or event. It's always been fun. I'd always go if I have the time.

xoxo

I have a feeling your blog and you are going to go far this year Vanisha and Im so glad I can follow you on the journey. I agree that quality and getting to know your readers far outways the quantity of a zillion followers who dont really take the time to get to know who you are.
Im in Perth and havent heard about many blogger meet ups, but I might google a bit harder and see what I can come up with :)

That's great advice V. I'm always meaning to organise a blogger meet up, but never get round to it. What is your dress made of?

What an inspiring column you created! Can't wait to read about what else you come up with weekly. This year I vow to stay more active in the blogging community, so I look forward to your advise. Have you read Blog Inc? I bought it for myself for Christmas, and came up with a new blog to kick-start my creativity and get back into the blogging swing of things!

I agree V in that I want a lot of things out of 2013 (mostly all academic related) but I do want to do more things for my blog for my sake like take better photos and write even sassier content. Things to improve myself personally so I can perfect my blog. I want to focus, like you, on quality over quantity and stuff. I want to go back to more basics and work on improving my photos and not hiding behind all the other stuff. We shall see what 2013 holds me, my academic life, and my blog.

Meeting up with local bloggers: What a lovely idea! I'll have to investigate whether there are any other bloggers in my region.
Happy 2013!

Such an inspirational post Vanisha....Its a great idea, I think i need to initiate bloggers meet here in Bhutan where blogging is particularly new and and people arent into it much.

You are such an inspiration, wish i could live in Australia so that i get to meet up with you hehe

It'll certainly be nice to have a blogger meet-up with those of us in the South Coast. I need to do a search myself for this area. Can't wait to see you next weekend :)

Great idea. Hope to meet you one day. I've never really tried a blogger meet up yet. The bloggers I spent time with were already friends before we all got into blogging. I'll go check out the bloggers in Dubai.

I would love to do a blogger meetup! I live so close to New York city and I hear there are tons of them there so I'm hoping to go to one in the spring and summer!

Best wishes growing your lovely blog!

Totally unrelated, but I thought you would be perfect to ask. We (Justin, Jarvis and I) are going to Fiji in Feb, do you have any suggestions on what to do and where to visit, We are based in a resort on Coral Coast.

Hi Vanisha!!

Happy New Year!

I'm a brand new and shiny blogger from Canberra also...although about to move to Victoria. I'm also a very good of friend of the delightful Megan! She has inspired me to start my own blog (sophboat.blogspot.com.au)...I was very excited to get my first comment today haha.

I've visited your little domain more than a few times now (and do I sense that it's had an upgrade...looks fantastic!) and am looking forward to following your blogs more closely and taking some inspiration from your writing!

Oh, why don't I live near you?
I've yet to spend time with any bloggers outside of the confinement of the computer screen! I hope to very soon as I will be meeting 2 blogger friends within the next few weeks. Yay! I can't wait.

I haven't actually had a blogger meet up but I have met some bloggers and it's always fabulous. I would love to have a meet up though. Those tips are awesome :)

This is so helpful. I am shy and feel so intimidated by the idea of meeting up with other bloggers. It's like I forget that they're just normal girls like me. lol. hopefully this year I'll meet up with someone in my area. Maybe I should add that to my bloggy goals for this year...

Sam said...

Hi Vanisha, just stopping by to say 'Hi' and hope that you're having a good week :)

You're absolutely right about meeting up with bloggers that you've actually communicated with previously. I feel privileged that I managed to meet a few bloggers in the last 14 months that I personally like and admire. It's great to find out that they're EXACTLY like they appear on their blog.

Meeting other bloggers has inspired me so much to grow my blog. for me meeting people and making friends and connections is what blogging is all about so its no surprise that meeting people in real life motivates me :)
This year I really want to work on producing quality content and being consistent in my blogging.
